Iterative functional equation
Definition
Let and be sets. An iterative functional equation for an unknown function is a functional equation in one variable of the following kind. In it, is evaluated at and at images of under given maps or under iterates of itself. The basic linear form, for and given and , is
Remarks
Example: on is of the basic linear form with , , , and solves it. Non-example: Cauchy's equation is not iterative, since it involves two independent variables. The case , is the Abel equation, and the case constant, is Schröder's equation. Equations with iterates of the unknown, such as , ask for iterative roots of .
