Schröder's equation

Summary

Schröder's equation asks for a function Ψ\Psi with Ψ(f(x))=λΨ(x)\Psi(f(x)) = \lambda \Psi(x), where the map ff and the constant λ\lambda are given. A solution is a change of coordinates in which ff becomes multiplication by λ\lambda. It is one of the basic iterative functional equations: once it is solved, every iterate of ff has the closed form fn=Ψ−1∘(λnΨ)f^n = \Psi^{-1} \circ (\lambda^n \Psi). Near a fixed point of a holomorphic map, the natural choice of λ\lambda is the derivative of ff at that point.
