Builds on FunctionFixed pointFunctional equation

Definition

Let XX be a set, let f ⁣:X→Xf \colon X \to X be a function, and let λ∈ℂ\lambda \in \C. Schröder's equation for ff and λ\lambda is the functional equation Ψ(f(x))=λ Ψ(x)for all x∈X,\Psi(f(x)) = \lambda \, \Psi(x) \quad \text{for all } x \in X, in which the unknown is a function Ψ ⁣:X→ℂ\Psi \colon X \to \C. In the main case, XX is a neighbourhood of a fixed point 00 of a holomorphic map ff, and λ=f′(0)\lambda = f'(0). Then one asks for a holomorphic Ψ\Psi with Ψ(0)=0\Psi(0) = 0 and Ψ′(0)=1\Psi'(0) = 1.

Remarks

Example: f(x)=x2+2xf(x) = x^2 + 2x on X=(−1,∞)X = (-1, \infty), with λ=2\lambda = 2. The fixed point is 00, and f′(0)=2f'(0) = 2. The function Ψ(x)=log⁡(1+x)\Psi(x) = \log(1 + x) is a solution with Ψ(0)=0\Psi(0) = 0 and Ψ′(0)=1\Psi'(0) = 1, since Ψ(f(x))=log⁡((1+x)2)=2log⁡(1+x)\Psi(f(x)) = \log\big((1+x)^2\big) = 2 \log(1 + x).

Non-example: for the same ff, the function Ψ(x)=x\Psi(x) = x is not a solution, since f(x)=x2+2x≠2xf(x) = x^2 + 2x \ne 2x for x≠0x \ne 0.

If Ψ\Psi is invertible, the equation says f=Ψ−1∘(λΨ)f = \Psi^{-1} \circ (\lambda \Psi), so fn=Ψ−1∘(λnΨ)f^n = \Psi^{-1} \circ (\lambda^n \Psi) for every n≥0n \ge 0. The function Ψ\Psi is called a Schröder function of ff. If Ψ\Psi is a solution, so is cΨc \Psi for every constant cc; the condition Ψ′(0)=1\Psi'(0) = 1 fixes this freedom.
