Definition
Let be a set and let be a function. A fractional iteration of is a family of functions such that:
- , the identity function of .
- .
- for all real .
Remarks
Example: on , let and . Clauses 1 and 2 hold by substitution, and clause 3 holds since .
Non-example: on , the family satisfies clauses 1 and 2 for , but fails clause 3, since .
Clause 3 with integer forces to be the usual iterate, and is an iterative root of order . In terms of , clause 3 is the translation equation . If is a bijective solution of Schröder's equation with , then is a fractional iteration. If is a bijective solution of the Abel equation , then is one. Some authors also call a family indexed by all real , or only by rational , a fractional iteration.
