Example

Let GG be the complex Heisenberg group of matrices (1xz01y001),x,y,z∈ℂ,\begin{pmatrix} 1 & x & z \\ 0 & 1 & y \\ 0 & 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad x, y, z \in \C, a complex Lie group isomorphic to ℂ3\C^3 as a complex manifold. Let Γ⊂G\Gamma \subset G be the subgroup of matrices with x,y,zx, y, z in the Gaussian integers ℤ[i]\Z[i]. The Iwasawa manifold is the quotient X=Γ\GX = \Gamma \backslash G of GG by the left action of Γ\Gamma. It is a compact complex manifold of dimension 33: Γ\Gamma is a discrete cocompact subgroup, a lattice of GG, and acts freely by holomorphic maps.

Check that XX is not Kähler. Left multiplication by the matrix with entries (a,b,c)(a, b, c) sends (x,y,z)(x, y, z) to (x+a, y+b, z+ay+c)(x + a, \, y + b, \, z + a y + c). So the holomorphic 11-forms dxdx, dydy and θ=dz−x dy\theta = dz - x\, dy are invariant: d(z+ay+c)−(x+a) d(y+b)=dz−x dyd(z + ay + c) - (x + a)\, d(y + b) = dz - x\, dy. They descend to holomorphic 11-forms on XX. But dθ=−dx∧dy≠0d\theta = -dx \wedge dy \ne 0, so θ\theta is not closed. On a compact Kähler manifold every holomorphic form is closed, so XX is not Kähler.

Remarks

XX is a nilmanifold and a fibre bundle over the complex torus ℂ2/ℤ[i]2\C^2 / \Z[i]^2, via (x,y,z)↦(x,y)(x, y, z) \mapsto (x, y), with fibre the elliptic curve ℂ/ℤ[i]\C / \Z[i]. Its holomorphic tangent bundle is trivial, spanned by the left-invariant vector fields dual to dx,dy,θdx, dy, \theta, so XX is a compact complex parallelizable manifold. Its first Betti number is 44, an even number, so non-Kählerness is not visible from b1b_1 here.
