Special functions Bessel and Airy functions Proposition
Jacobi–Anger expansion
Statement
Let denote the Bessel function of the first kind of integer order . For all and , and both series converge absolutely and uniformly in .
Remarks
The generating function of the Bessel functions is for , obtained by multiplying the series of and . Putting gives the second formula, since . Replacing by turns into and gives the first formula. So the expansion is the Fourier series of the periodic function , and its Fourier coefficients are . Example: at the second formula gives , using .

For a student
Taking real and imaginary parts gives expansions of and used in frequency modulation, where the strengths of the sidebands are Bessel values. Reading off a Fourier coefficient gives Bessel's integral for . In two-dimensional scattering it expands an incident plane wave in cylindrical waves, the first step of the partial-wave method. Multiplying two such expansions gives addition theorems for Bessel functions.
