Kobayashi hyperbolic manifold
Definition
Let be a connected complex manifold with Kobayashi pseudodistance . The manifold is Kobayashi hyperbolic if for all with , that is, if is a distance on .
Remarks
When is hyperbolic, induces the manifold topology of , by a theorem of Barth. Example: a bounded domain is hyperbolic. Check: if on and , choose a complex linear function with and on ; since decreases Kobayashi distances, . Non-example: is not hyperbolic, since . More generally, if there is a nonconstant holomorphic map , then with for some , so is not hyperbolic. Hence complex tori and complex projective spaces are not hyperbolic. A Riemann surface is hyperbolic exactly when its universal covering is the unit disc.
