Definition
Let be a probability space and let be a measure-preserving transformation. The Koopman operator of is the composition operator on the space of square-integrable functions modulo equality almost everywhere.
Remarks
The operator is well defined and isometric: since for all , one gets . If is invertible with measurable measure-preserving inverse, then is a unitary operator with inverse .
Example: for the rotation with Lebesgue measure, the functions satisfy . They form an orthonormal basis of , so is diagonal in this basis.
Non-example: if does not preserve , the formula need not define a bounded operator on . For on with Lebesgue measure and , the function is square-integrable but is not.
The same formula defines an isometry of for every . The constants are always fixed by , and is ergodic if and only if they are the only fixed vectors.
