Definition

Let XX be a compact complex manifold. A deformation of XX over a pointed complex analytic space (S,s0)(S, s_0) consists of two pieces of data. The first is a proper flat holomorphic map ϖ ⁣:𝒳→S\varpi \colon \mathcal{X} \to S whose fibres are compact complex manifolds. The second is a biholomorphism X≅ϖ−1(s0)X \cong \varpi^{-1}(s_0). This extends the notion of deformation over manifolds. A Kuranishi family (semi-universal deformation) of XX is a deformation ϖ ⁣:𝒳→(S,s0)\varpi \colon \mathcal{X} \to (S, s_0) of XX such that:

  1. It is complete: let 𝒴→(T,t0)\mathcal{Y} \to (T, t_0) be any deformation of XX. Then there are a neighbourhood T′T' of t0t_0 and a holomorphic map f ⁣:(T′,t0)→(S,s0)f \colon (T', t_0) \to (S, s_0) such that 𝒴∣T′≅f∗𝒳\mathcal{Y}|_{T'} \cong f^* \mathcal{X}. The isomorphism is required to be compatible with the identifications of the central fibres with XX.
  2. The differential dft0 ⁣:Tt0T→Ts0Sdf_{t_0} \colon T_{t_0} T \to T_{s_0} S of any such ff is uniquely determined by the deformation 𝒴\mathcal{Y}.

Remarks

Here Ts0ST_{s_0} S is the Zariski tangent space of SS at s0s_0. Kuranishi's theorem states that every compact complex manifold has a Kuranishi family, unique up to a non-unique isomorphism of germs. Its Kodaira–Spencer map identifies Ts0ST_{s_0} S with H1(X,ΘX)H^1(X, \Theta_X), and the germ (S,s0)(S, s_0) is the zero set of a holomorphic map from a neighbourhood of 00 in H1(X,ΘX)H^1(X, \Theta_X) to H2(X,ΘX)H^2(X, \Theta_X). If H0(X,ΘX)=0H^0(X, \Theta_X) = 0, the map ff in clause 1 is itself unique, and the family is universal.

Example: X=ℙnX = \mathbb{P}^n has H1(X,ΘX)=0H^1(X, \Theta_X) = 0, so its Kuranishi family lives over a single point: ℙn\mathbb{P}^n is rigid.

Non-example: for an elliptic curve EE, the trivial family E×Δ→ΔE \times \Delta \to \Delta over a disc is a deformation of EE but not complete. Every pullback of it is again trivial, while the family ℂ/(ℤ+τℤ)\C/(\Z + \tau\Z) near τ0\tau_0 contains fibres not biholomorphic to EE, so it is not such a pullback.
