Statement

Let EE be a real Hausdorff topological vector space, and let C⊆EC \subseteq E be a nonempty compact convex set. Let f ⁣:C×C→ℝf \colon C \times C \to \R be a function such that:

  1. for every y∈Cy \in C, the function x↦f(x,y)x \mapsto f(x, y) is lower semicontinuous on CC;
  2. for every x∈Cx \in C, the function y↦f(x,y)y \mapsto f(x, y) is quasiconcave on CC, that is, y↦−f(x,y)y \mapsto -f(x, y) is quasiconvex.

Then there is xˉ∈C\bar x \in C with sup⁡y∈Cf(xˉ,y)≤sup⁡y∈Cf(y,y).\sup_{y \in C} f(\bar x, y) \le \sup_{y \in C} f(y, y). In particular, if f(y,y)≤0f(y, y) \le 0 for all y∈Cy \in C, then there is xˉ∈C\bar x \in C with f(xˉ,y)≤0f(\bar x, y) \le 0 for all y∈Cy \in C.

Remarks

It suffices to prove the second form, applied to f−cf - c with c=sup⁡yf(y,y)c = \sup_y f(y, y) when cc is finite; the first form is trivial when c=+∞c = +\infty. For each yy the set S(y)={x∈C:f(x,y)≤0}S(y) = \set{x \in C : f(x, y) \le 0} is closed by clause 1. If a point xx of the convex hull of y1,…,yky_1, \dots, y_k lay outside every S(yi)S(y_i), clause 2 would give f(x,x)≥min⁡if(x,yi)>0f(x, x) \ge \min_i f(x, y_i) > 0, which is impossible. So the sets S(y)S(y) satisfy the hypothesis of the Knaster–Kuratowski–Mazurkiewicz lemma in Fan's form, and by compactness of CC they have a common point xˉ\bar x.

Example: let Δk\Delta_k be the set of probability vectors in ℝk\R^k, and let AA be a real m×nm \times n matrix. The payoff of the matrix game is g(p,q)=pTAqg(p, q) = p^T A q for p∈Δmp \in \Delta_m and q∈Δnq \in \Delta_n, as in von Neumann's minimax theorem. Let C=Δm×ΔnC = \Delta_m \times \Delta_n, and for z=(p,q)z = (p, q) and w=(p′,q′)w = (p', q') in CC let f(z,w)=g(p′,q)−g(p,q′)f(z, w) = g(p', q) - g(p, q'). This ff is continuous, affine in ww, and f(z,z)=0f(z, z) = 0. The point zˉ=(pˉ,qˉ)\bar z = (\bar p, \bar q) given by the theorem satisfies g(p′,qˉ)≤g(pˉ,q′)g(p', \bar q) \le g(\bar p, q') for all p′,q′p', q', so (pˉ,qˉ)(\bar p, \bar q) is a pair of optimal strategies.

Compactness cannot be dropped: on C=[0,∞)⊆ℝC = [0, \infty) \subseteq \R, the function f(x,y)=y−xf(x, y) = y - x satisfies both clauses and f(y,y)=0f(y, y) = 0, but for every xx there is y>xy > x with f(x,y)>0f(x, y) > 0.

For a student

Ky Fan proved the inequality in 1972 as a common source of minimax theorems, fixed-point theorems and existence theorems for equilibria. From it one derives the minimax theorems of von Neumann and Sion, Nash equilibria of games with convex strategy sets, and solutions of variational inequalities on compact convex sets. Its proof rests on the KKM lemma, which is equivalent to the Brouwer fixed-point theorem.
