Definition

Let KK be a field, let n≥0n \ge 0, and let x0,…,xn∈Kx_0, \dots, x_n \in K be pairwise distinct. For j=0,…,nj = 0, \dots, n, the Lagrange basis polynomial ℓj\ell_j is the polynomial in the polynomial ring K[x]K[x] given by ℓj(x)=∏0≤k≤nk≠jx−xkxj−xk.\ell_j(x) = \prod_{\substack{0 \le k \le n \\ k \ne j}} \frac{x - x_k}{x_j - x_k}.

Remarks

Each ℓj\ell_j has degree nn, and ℓj(xi)=1\ell_j(x_i) = 1 if i=ji = j and ℓj(xi)=0\ell_j(x_i) = 0 if i≠ji \ne j. The ℓj\ell_j form a basis of the space of polynomials of degree at most nn, and every such pp satisfies p=∑jp(xj) ℓjp = \sum_{j} p(x_j) \, \ell_j. They also satisfy ∑jℓj=1\sum_j \ell_j = 1, the case p=1p = 1. With ℓ(x)=∏k=0n(x−xk)\ell(x) = \prod_{k=0}^{n} (x - x_k), one has ℓj(x)=ℓ(x)(x−xj) ℓ′(xj)\ell_j(x) = \dfrac{\ell(x)}{(x - x_j) \, \ell'(x_j)}.

Example: for the nodes 0,1,20, 1, 2 in ℝ\R, ℓ1(x)=(x−0)(x−2)(1−0)(1−2)=−x(x−2)\ell_1(x) = \frac{(x - 0)(x - 2)}{(1 - 0)(1 - 2)} = -x(x - 2). Check: ℓ1(0)=0\ell_1(0) = 0, ℓ1(1)=1\ell_1(1) = 1 and ℓ1(2)=0\ell_1(2) = 0.

Non-example: for the nodes 0,0,10, 0, 1, the nodes are not distinct, and the factor x−x1x0−x1\frac{x - x_1}{x_0 - x_1} in ℓ0\ell_0 has denominator 00, so ℓ0\ell_0 is not defined.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
