Statement

Let Fโ€‰โฃ:๐’žโ†’๐’žF \colon \mathcal{C} \to \mathcal{C} be a functor. An FF-algebra is a pair (A,a)(A, a) of an object AA and a morphism aโ€‰โฃ:F(A)โ†’Aa \colon F(A) \to A. A morphism of FF-algebras hโ€‰โฃ:(A,a)โ†’(B,b)h \colon (A, a) \to (B, b) is a morphism hโ€‰โฃ:Aโ†’Bh \colon A \to B with hโˆ˜a=bโˆ˜F(h)h \circ a = b \circ F(h). If (I,i)(I, i) is an initial object of the category of FF-algebras, then iโ€‰โฃ:F(I)โ†’Ii \colon F(I) \to I is an isomorphism.

Remarks

The pair (F(I),F(i))(F(I), F(i)) is an FF-algebra, so by initiality there is a unique algebra morphism jโ€‰โฃ:(I,i)โ†’(F(I),F(i))j \colon (I, i) \to (F(I), F(i)). Then iโˆ˜ji \circ j is an algebra morphism from (I,i)(I, i) to itself, so it equals idโกI\id_I by uniqueness. Also jโˆ˜i=F(i)โˆ˜F(j)=F(iโˆ˜j)=idโกF(I)j \circ i = F(i) \circ F(j) = F(i \circ j) = \id_{F(I)}, using that jj is an algebra morphism. So jj is the inverse of ii.

Example: on the category of sets let F(X)=1+XF(X) = 1 + X, where 1={โˆ—}1 = \set{*}. The initial FF-algebra is the set of natural numbers with the map sending โˆ—* to 00 and nn to n+1n + 1. The lemma says that this map 1+โ„•โ†’โ„•1 + \N \to \N is a bijection: every natural number is either 00 or a successor, in exactly one way.

Example of a consequence: the power set functor on sets has no initial algebra. An initial algebra would give a bijection between a set and its power set, which Cantor's theorem rules out.

The dual statement holds as well: the structure map of a terminal FF-coalgebra is an isomorphism.

Going deeper

For a student

The lemma is the starting point of the theory of inductive and coinductive data types. It shows that an initial algebra, when it exists, is a fixed point F(I)โ‰…IF(I) \cong I of the functor. It also gives quick non-existence results, as with the power set functor. Its dual, for terminal coalgebras, says that infinite streams over AA satisfy Aร—Sโ‰…SA \times S \cong S.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
