Lanczos sigma factor
Builds on Fourier seriesFourier coefficient
Definition
Let be an integer. Let be an integer with . The Lanczos sigma factor of is for , and for it is For a -periodic integrable function with Fourier coefficients , the sigma approximation of order of is
Remarks
Let be the partial sum of the Fourier series. Since for , So the sigma approximation is the moving average of the partial sum over a window of length . In the notation , the factors are .
Example: for and , the factor is , so . This agrees with the window average .
Non-example: the Fejér weights also fade out high frequencies, but they are not the sigma factors; for and they give , not .
