Definition

Let TT be a distribution on ℝ\R with support in [0,∞)[0, \infty). Let σ0∈ℝ\sigma_0 \in \R be such that e−σ0tTe^{-\sigma_0 t} T is a tempered distribution. Fix a smooth function χ ⁣:ℝ→[0,1]\chi \colon \R \to [0, 1] with χ=1\chi = 1 on [−1/2,∞)[-1/2, \infty) and χ=0\chi = 0 on (−∞,−1](-\infty, -1]. The Laplace transform of TT is the function defined for Re⁡s>σ0\operatorname{Re} s > \sigma_0 by (ℒT)(s)=⟨e−σ0tT, χ(t) e−(s−σ0)t⟩.(\mathcal{L} T)(s) = \left\langle e^{-\sigma_0 t} T, \ \chi(t) \, e^{-(s - \sigma_0) t} \right\rangle.

Remarks

For Re⁡s>σ0\operatorname{Re} s > \sigma_0, the function χ(t)e−(s−σ0)t\chi(t) e^{-(s - \sigma_0) t} lies in the Schwartz space, so the pairing makes sense. The value does not depend on the choice of χ\chi or of σ0\sigma_0, because TT is supported in [0,∞)[0, \infty); formally it is ⟨T,e−st⟩\langle T, e^{-st} \rangle. ℒT\mathcal{L} T is holomorphic on Re⁡s>σ0\operatorname{Re} s > \sigma_0. For a locally integrable function ff of exponential order vanishing on (−∞,0)(-\infty, 0), it agrees with the ordinary Laplace transform ∫0∞e−stf(t) dt\int_0^\infty e^{-st} f(t) \, dt. For all such TT, ℒ(T′)=s ℒT\mathcal{L}(T') = s \, \mathcal{L} T, and the transform of a convolution is the product of the transforms.

Example: the Dirac delta δ\delta has support {0}\set{0} and is tempered, so σ0=0\sigma_0 = 0 works, and ℒδ(s)=χ(0)e0=1\mathcal{L}\delta(s) = \chi(0) e^{0} = 1. Likewise ℒδ′(s)=−ddt(χ(t)e−st)∣t=0=s\mathcal{L}\delta'(s) = -\frac{d}{dt}\left(\chi(t) e^{-st}\right)\big|_{t=0} = s. With the Heaviside step function HH, ℒH=1/s\mathcal{L} H = 1/s and H′=δH' = \delta, consistent with ℒ(H′)=s⋅1s=1\mathcal{L}(H') = s \cdot \frac{1}{s} = 1.

Non-example: T=H(t)et2T = H(t) e^{t^2} is a distribution supported in [0,∞)[0, \infty), but the positive function e−σ0tet2e^{-\sigma_0 t} e^{t^2} grows faster than any polynomial. Hence e−σ0tTe^{-\sigma_0 t} T is tempered for no σ0\sigma_0, and TT has no Laplace transform.
