Builds on Hopf algebraIntegral of a Hopf algebraFrobenius algebraHopf module

Statement

Let KK be a field and let HH be a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra over KK. Then:

  1. The space of left integrals in HH is one-dimensional over KK.
  2. HH is a Frobenius algebra.

Remarks

The proof applies the fundamental theorem of Hopf modules to the dual space H∗H^*, which is a Hopf module over HH. This gives an isomorphism H∗≅(H∗)coH⊗HH^* \cong (H^*)^{\mathrm{co}H} \otimes H, and the coinvariants of H∗H^* are the left integrals on HH. Comparing dimensions shows that this space is one-dimensional, and the isomorphism H∗≅HH^* \cong H of HH-modules is the Frobenius property; applying this to H∗H^* gives the statement about integrals in HH. Example: for a finite group GG, the left integrals in KGKG are the multiples of ∑g∈Gg\sum_{g \in G} g. Indeed, if Λ=∑gagg\Lambda = \sum_g a_g g satisfies hΛ=Λh \Lambda = \Lambda for all h∈Gh \in G, then all aga_g are equal. Without finite dimension the conclusion fails: in K[x]K[x] with xx primitive the only integral is 00. The same work shows that the antipode of a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra is bijective.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is the starting point for the structure theory of finite-dimensional Hopf algebras. Together with it, Larson and Sweedler proved the Hopf algebra form of Maschke's theorem: HH is semisimple if and only if ε(Λ)≠0\varepsilon(\Lambda) \ne 0 for a nonzero left integral Λ\Lambda. For H=KGH = KG this gives ε(∑gg)=∣G∣\varepsilon(\sum_g g) = \abs{G}, and so recovers the classical condition that the characteristic of KK does not divide ∣G∣\abs{G}. Integrals also define the distinguished group-like elements of HH and H∗H^*, which appear in Radford's formula for S4S^4.
