Definition

Let ν,μ∈ℂ\nu, \mu \in \C. The general Legendre equation is the ordinary differential equation (1−z2)w′′−2zw′+(ν(ν+1)−μ21−z2)w=0.(1 - z^2) w'' - 2z w' + \left( \nu(\nu + 1) - \frac{\mu^2}{1 - z^2} \right) w = 0. A Legendre function of degree ν\nu and order μ\mu is a solution ww of this equation on a domain of ℂ∖{−1,1}\C \setminus \set{-1, 1}. The Legendre function of the first kind of degree ν\nu and order 00 is Pν(z)=2F1(−ν,ν+1;1;1−z2),P_\nu(z) = {}_2F_1\left( -\nu, \nu + 1; 1; \frac{1 - z}{2} \right), where 2F1{}_2F_1 is the hypergeometric function. The series converges for ∣1−z∣<2\abs{1 - z} < 2, and PνP_\nu extends analytically to ℂ∖(−∞,−1]\C \setminus (-\infty, -1].

Remarks

For ν=n\nu = n a nonnegative integer, the factor (−n)k(-n)_k vanishes for k>nk > n, the series stops, and PnP_n is the Legendre polynomial of degree nn. Check for n=1n = 1: P1(z)=1+(−1)(2)1⋅1−z2=zP_1(z) = 1 + \frac{(-1)(2)}{1} \cdot \frac{1 - z}{2} = z. For μ=0\mu = 0 the equation is Legendre's equation with λ=ν(ν+1)\lambda = \nu(\nu + 1). A second, independent solution is the Legendre function of the second kind QνQ_\nu; for example Q0(x)=12ln⁡1+x1−xQ_0(x) = \frac12 \ln \frac{1 + x}{1 - x} for −1<x<1-1 < x < 1. Non-example: w(z)=z2w(z) = z^2 is not a Legendre function of order 00 for any ν\nu, since the equation would require 2−6z2+ν(ν+1)z2=02 - 6z^2 + \nu(\nu + 1) z^2 = 0 for all zz, which fails at z=0z = 0. For general order μ\mu the functions PνμP_\nu^\mu and QνμQ_\nu^\mu are also given by hypergeometric functions, with a factor (z+1z−1)μ/2\left( \frac{z + 1}{z - 1} \right)^{\mu/2} in front.
