Definition

Let λ∈ℝ\lambda \in \R, let α\alpha be a real number with 0<α≤10 < \alpha \le 1, and let s∈ℂs \in \C. The Lerch zeta function is the generalized Dirichlet series L(λ,α,s)=∑n=0∞e2πiλn(n+α)s.L(\lambda, \alpha, s) = \sum_{n=0}^{\infty} \frac{e^{2\pi i \lambda n}}{(n + \alpha)^s}. It converges for Re⁡s>1\operatorname{Re} s > 1, and also for Re⁡s>0\operatorname{Re} s > 0 when λ∉ℤ\lambda \notin \Z.

Remarks

The Lerch transcendent is Φ(z,s,a)=∑n≥0zn(n+a)−s\Phi(z, s, a) = \sum_{n \ge 0} z^n (n + a)^{-s}, defined for ∣z∣<1\abs{z} < 1 and a∉{0,−1,−2,…}a \notin \set{0, -1, -2, \ldots}, and for ∣z∣=1\abs{z} = 1 when Re⁡s>1\operatorname{Re} s > 1. The two are related by L(λ,α,s)=Φ(e2πiλ,s,α)L(\lambda, \alpha, s) = \Phi(e^{2\pi i \lambda}, s, \alpha).

Example: for λ∈ℤ\lambda \in \Z every phase factor is 11, so L(λ,α,s)=ζ(s,α)L(\lambda, \alpha, s) = \zeta(s, \alpha) is the Hurwitz zeta function, and L(0,1,s)=ζ(s)L(0, 1, s) = \zeta(s). With a=1a = 1 the transcendent gives the polylogarithm: z Φ(z,s,1)=∑n≥0zn+1/(n+1)s=Li⁡s(z)z \, \Phi(z, s, 1) = \sum_{n \ge 0} z^{n+1} / (n+1)^s = \operatorname{Li}_s(z).

Non-example: λ=0\lambda = 0, α=1\alpha = 1, s=1s = 1 gives the harmonic series ∑1/(n+1)\sum 1/(n+1), which diverges; the condition Re⁡s>1\operatorname{Re} s > 1 is needed when λ∈ℤ\lambda \in \Z. For λ=12\lambda = \frac12 and the same α,s\alpha, s, the series is 1−12+13−⋯=log⁡21 - \frac12 + \frac13 - \cdots = \log 2, which converges.

As a function of ss, L(λ,α,s)L(\lambda, \alpha, s) extends to a meromorphic function on ℂ\C; for λ∉ℤ\lambda \notin \Z it is entire.
