Definition

Let (X,d)(X, d) be a metric space with its Borel σ-algebra ℬ\mathcal{B}. Let 𝒫(X)\mathcal{P}(X) be the set of Borel probability measures on XX. For A⊆XA \subseteq X and ε>0\varepsilon > 0, let Aε={x∈X:d(x,a)<ε for some a∈A}A^\varepsilon = \set{x \in X : d(x, a) < \varepsilon \text{ for some } a \in A}. The Lévy–Prokhorov metric is the map π ⁣:𝒫(X)×𝒫(X)→[0,1]\pi \colon \mathcal{P}(X) \times \mathcal{P}(X) \to [0, 1] given by π(μ,ν)=inf⁡{ε>0:μ(A)≤ν(Aε)+ε and ν(A)≤μ(Aε)+ε for all A∈ℬ}.\pi(\mu, \nu) = \inf \set{\varepsilon > 0 : \mu(A) \le \nu(A^\varepsilon) + \varepsilon \text{ and } \nu(A) \le \mu(A^\varepsilon) + \varepsilon \text{ for all } A \in \mathcal{B}}. The value is an infimum.

Remarks

The function π\pi is a metric on 𝒫(X)\mathcal{P}(X), and π≤1\pi \le 1 because every ε≥1\varepsilon \ge 1 satisfies both inequalities. If XX is separable, then π(μn,μ)→0\pi(\mu_n, \mu) \to 0 if and only if μn\mu_n converges weakly to μ\mu. If XX is separable and complete, then so is (𝒫(X),π)(\mathcal{P}(X), \pi).

Example: let δx\delta_x be the Dirac measure at xx, and let x,y∈Xx, y \in X. If ε>d(x,y)\varepsilon > d(x, y), then every Borel set AA containing xx has y∈Aεy \in A^\varepsilon, so δx(A)≤δy(Aε)\delta_x(A) \le \delta_y(A^\varepsilon), and symmetrically. Hence π(δx,δy)=min⁡(d(x,y),1)\pi(\delta_x, \delta_y) = \min(d(x, y), 1).

Non-example: for ε<min⁡(d(x,y),1)\varepsilon < \min(d(x, y), 1) the value ε\varepsilon is not admissible. Take A={x}A = \set{x}: then y∉Aεy \notin A^\varepsilon, and 1≤0+ε1 \le 0 + \varepsilon fails.

On ℝ\R, the points 1/n1/n and 00 give π(δ1/n,δ0)=1/n\pi(\delta_{1/n}, \delta_0) = 1/n, while the total variation distance stays equal to 11.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
