Definition

Let D⊆ℝnD \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n and let f ⁣:D→ℝmf \colon D \to \mathbb{R}^m. Let a∈ℝna \in \mathbb{R}^n be a limit point of DD: each open ball about aa contains a point of DD other than aa. Let L∈ℝmL \in \mathbb{R}^m. When this holds, f(x)f(x) tends to LL as xx tends to aa, with the notation lim⁡x→af(x)=L\lim_{x \to a} f(x) = L. For each ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is a δ>0\delta > 0 such that ∥f(x)−L∥<ε\|f(x) - L\| < \varepsilon for each x∈Dx \in D with 0<∥x−a∥<δ0 < \|x - a\| < \delta. Here ∥⋅∥\|\cdot\| is the Euclidean norm of Euclidean space.

Remarks

A limit is unique when it exists, because aa is a limit point of DD. The value f(a)f(a), and even whether aa is in DD, has no effect on the limit. A function into ℝm\mathbb{R}^m tends to LL if and only if each component fif_i tends to LiL_i. To show that a limit does not exist, it is enough to find two paths with different limits.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
