Limits preserve non-strict inequalities

Builds on Limit of a sequenceEpsilon-N definition of the limit of a sequence

Statement

Let (an)(a_n) and (bn)(b_n) be real sequences that converge to real numbers aa and bb. Assume that there is a natural number NN such that an≤bna_n \le b_n for all n≥Nn \ge N. Then a≤ba \le b.

Remarks

Strict inequalities do not pass to the limit. For example, 0<1/n0 < 1/n for all n≥1n \ge 1, but lim⁡1/n=0\lim 1/n = 0. With a constant sequence bn=cb_n = c, it says: if an≤ca_n \le c for large nn, then lim⁡an≤c\lim a_n \le c. The proof is by contradiction. If a>ba > b, take ε=(a−b)/2\varepsilon = (a - b)/2. Then for large nn we get bn<anb_n < a_n.
