Linear algebraic group
Definition
Let be a field. A linear algebraic group over is an algebraic group over whose underlying scheme is affine.
Remarks
Every linear algebraic group over is isomorphic to a closed subgroup scheme of for some . So an equivalent definition is: a closed subgroup scheme of some general linear group . In the classical language, with algebraically closed, it is a subgroup of that is the zero set of a set of polynomials in the matrix entries. Many authors also require to be smooth.
Example: . It is a closed subgroup of , cut out by , so it is affine.
Non-example: an elliptic curve over is an algebraic group, but it is projective of positive dimension and so not affine.
