Problem
Let , , be real matrices of sizes , and , and let . Let be symmetric positive semidefinite matrices, and let be a symmetric positive definite matrix. Let and be independent Wiener processes in and with covariance matrices and . Here is positive semidefinite and is positive definite. Let the initial state be Gaussian with mean and covariance , independent of and . The state and the observation solve the stochastic differential equations A control is admissible if depends only on the observations , , that is, is adapted to the filtration generated by . The linear-quadratic-Gaussian control problem is to minimize the expected value over all admissible controls .
Remarks
The problem is solved, and its solution is the separation principle. The optimal control is , where solves the Riccati equation of the linear-quadratic regulator and is the Kalman–Bucy filter estimate of from the observations. Without noise and with full observation of the state, the problem reduces to the linear-quadratic regulator. The infinite-horizon version uses the average cost per unit time and the algebraic Riccati equations of the regulator and of the filter. LQG controllers can have poor robustness margins, which was one motivation for robust control methods.
