Problem
Let be a real matrix and a real matrix. Let and be symmetric positive semidefinite matrices, and let be a symmetric positive definite matrix. Let and . The finite-horizon linear-quadratic regulator problem is to minimize over all controls , where solves , .
Remarks
The problem is solved. Let be the solution of the Riccati differential equation with . Then the unique optimal control is given by the linear feedback , and the optimal cost is . The proof completes the square: along any trajectory, . Integrating from to gives , which is smallest exactly for the feedback above. For the infinite horizon and , assume stabilizable and detectable, where . Then the algebraic Riccati equation has a unique symmetric positive semidefinite solution . The feedback is optimal and makes the closed loop asymptotically stable.
