Lipschitz class

Summary

The Lipschitz class Lip α\mathrm{Lip}\,\alpha, for 0<α≤10 < \alpha \le 1, is the set of functions on an interval that satisfy ∣f(x)−f(y)∣≤M∣x−y∣α\abs{f(x) - f(y)} \le M \abs{x - y}^\alpha for some constant MM. For α=1\alpha = 1 these are the Lipschitz continuous functions, and for α<1\alpha < 1 the Hölder continuous functions of exponent α\alpha. In approximation theory these classes are the standard scale of smoothness. For 0<α<10 < \alpha < 1, a continuous 2π2\pi-periodic function is in Lip α\mathrm{Lip}\,\alpha exactly when its best trigonometric approximation of degree nn has error of order n−αn^{-\alpha}.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
