Lucas–Lehmer test
Builds on Mersenne numberCongruence modulo n
Statement
Let be an odd prime, and let be the Mersenne number. Define the sequence by and for . Then is prime if and only if .
Remarks
For example, take and . Modulo , the sequence is , so and is prime. In practice, one reduces each term modulo . Then the test needs squarings of numbers with at most bits.
History
Édouard Lucas developed the test in 1878, and Derrick Henry Lehmer proved it in 1930.
