Lyndon–Hochschild–Serre spectral sequence

Builds on Normal subgroupQuotient groupGroup homology

Statement

Let GG be a group, let NN be a normal subgroup of GG, and let MM be a GG-module. For each q≥0q \ge 0, the cohomology group Hq(N,M)H^q(N, M) is a module over the quotient group G/NG/N, through the action of GG by conjugation. Then there is a first-quadrant cohomological spectral sequence E2p,q=Hp(G/N,Hq(N,M))⟹Hp+q(G,M).E_2^{p,q} = H^p\big(G/N, H^q(N, M)\big) \Longrightarrow H^{p+q}(G, M).

Remarks

The spectral sequence is the Grothendieck spectral sequence of the composite of the functors M↦MNM \mapsto M^N and A↦AG/NA \mapsto A^{G/N}, whose composite is M↦MGM \mapsto M^G. It applies because M↦MNM \mapsto M^N sends injective GG-modules to G/NG/N-modules that are acyclic for A↦AG/NA \mapsto A^{G/N}. There is a homological version Ep,q2=Hp(G/N,Hq(N,M))⇒Hp+q(G,M)E^2_{p,q} = H_p(G/N, H_q(N, M)) \Rightarrow H_{p+q}(G, M) for group homology.

The terms of low degree give the inflation-restriction exact sequence 0→H1(G/N,MN)→H1(G,M)→H1(N,M)G/N→H2(G/N,MN)→H2(G,M).0 \to H^1(G/N, M^N) \to H^1(G, M) \to H^1(N, M)^{G/N} \to H^2(G/N, M^N) \to H^2(G, M).

Example: suppose that Hq(N,M)=0H^q(N, M) = 0 for all q≥1q \ge 1, as happens when NN is finite and multiplication by ∣N∣\abs{N} is bijective on MM. Then the E2E_2 page is concentrated in the row q=0q = 0, the sequence collapses, and Hp(G,M)≅Hp(G/N,MN)H^p(G, M) \cong H^p(G/N, M^N) for all pp.

Going deeper

For a student

The five-term exact sequence of the homological version already gives Hopf's formula for H2H_2. For a polycyclic group, one can apply the spectral sequence step by step along a normal series with cyclic factors. Its topological counterpart is the Serre spectral sequence of the fibration BN→BG→B(G/N)BN \to BG \to B(G/N) of classifying spaces.
