Statement

Let EE be a real vector space, let F⊆EF \subseteq E be a linear subspace, and let K⊆EK \subseteq E be a convex cone. Let φ ⁣:F→ℝ\varphi \colon F \to \R be a linear form such that φ(x)≥0\varphi(x) \ge 0 for every x∈F∩Kx \in F \cap K. Assume that for every y∈Ey \in E there is x∈Fx \in F with y−x∈Ky - x \in K. Then there is a linear form ψ ⁣:E→ℝ\psi \colon E \to \R such that ψ(x)=φ(x)\psi(x) = \varphi(x) for all x∈Fx \in F and ψ(y)≥0\psi(y) \ge 0 for all y∈Ky \in K.

Remarks

The proof extends φ\varphi one dimension at a time, as in the proof of the Hahn–Banach theorem. To add a vector y∉Fy \notin F, one needs a value c=ψ(y)c = \psi(y) with sup⁡φ(x)≤c≤inf⁡φ(x′)\sup \varphi(x) \le c \le \inf \varphi(x'), where xx runs over FF with y−x∈Ky - x \in K and x′x' runs over FF with x′−y∈Kx' - y \in K. The hypothesis on FF makes both sets nonempty, and positivity of φ\varphi on F∩KF \cap K makes the supremum at most the infimum. Zorn's lemma then gives an extension to all of EE. In the moment problem, EE is a space of functions containing the polynomials and KK is the cone of nonnegative functions in EE. There FF is the space of polynomials and φ\varphi is the moment functional xn↦mnx^n \mapsto m_n. The positive extension ψ\psi is then turned into a measure by a representation theorem, which solves the Hamburger moment problem for a positive moment functional. Without the assumption that y−x∈Ky - x \in K for some x∈Fx \in F, an extension may fail to exist. For example, take E=ℝ2E = \R^2, K={(s,t):t>0}∪{(s,0):s≥0}K = \set{(s, t) : t > 0} \cup \set{(s, 0) : s \ge 0}, F=ℝ×{0}F = \R \times \set{0} and φ(s,0)=s\varphi(s, 0) = s; then φ≥0\varphi \ge 0 on F∩KF \cap K, but a positive extension ψ(s,t)=s+ct\psi(s, t) = s + ct would need s+c≥0s + c \ge 0 for all ss, which is impossible.

For a student

The theorem is the abstract tool behind the existence parts of moment problems. A sequence (mn)(m_n) defines a linear form LL on polynomials by L(xn)=mnL(x^n) = m_n. Suppose that L(p)≥0L(p) \ge 0 for every polynomial p≥0p \ge 0. Then the theorem extends LL to a positive linear form on a larger space of functions, such as the continuous functions bounded by a polynomial. The Riesz representation theorem then gives a measure with moments mnm_n. The same argument, with polynomials in several variables and nonnegativity on a closed set, gives the multivariate form of this existence result.
