Builds on Lp multiplierFourier transformLp space

Statement

Let m ⁣:ℝ→ℂm \colon \R \to \C be a bounded function, with ∣m(ξ)∣≤A\abs{m(\xi)} \le A for all ξ∈ℝ\xi \in \R. For each integer jj, let Ij=[2j,2j+1]I_j = [2^j, 2^{j+1}] and Ij′=[−2j+1,−2j]I_j' = [-2^{j+1}, -2^j]. Assume that mm has bounded variation on each IjI_j and each Ij′I_j', with total variation at most AA on each of these intervals. Then mm is an LpL^p multiplier for every 1<p<∞1 < p < \infty. Let f^\hat f be the Fourier transform of ff. There is a constant CpC_p, depending only on pp, with ∥(mf^)∨∥Lp(ℝ)≤CpA∥f∥Lp(ℝ)\norm{(m \hat f)^\vee}_{L^p(\R)} \le C_p A \norm{f}_{L^p(\R)} for every Schwartz function ff.

Remarks

The proof uses Littlewood–Paley theory. The operators that cut the frequencies to the dyadic pieces IjI_j and Ij′I_j' split ff into pieces whose square function has LpL^p norm comparable to that of ff. On each dyadic piece, a function of bounded variation is an average of indicators of intervals. The multiplier of an interval is built from Hilbert transforms, which are bounded on LpL^p. A vector-valued bound for these interval operators then gives the theorem.

Example: m(ξ)=∣ξ∣itm(\xi) = \abs{\xi}^{it} for a real t≠0t \ne 0 has modulus 11, and on [2j,2j+1][2^j, 2^{j+1}] its variation is ∫2j2j+1∣t∣/ξ dξ=∣t∣log⁡2\int_{2^j}^{2^{j+1}} \abs{t}/\xi \, d\xi = \abs{t} \log 2. So the imaginary powers of ∣ξ∣\abs{\xi} are LpL^p multipliers for 1<p<∞1 < p < \infty.

The conclusion fails at p=1p = 1 and p=∞p = \infty: the multiplier m=𝟏[0,∞)m = \mathbf{1}_{[0, \infty)} satisfies the hypotheses but gives an operator built from the Hilbert transform, which is unbounded on L1L^1. There is also a version on ℝn\R^n, in which the condition is imposed on the dyadic rectangles, using mixed derivatives of mm.

For a student

This criterion needs no smoothness: only bounded variation on each dyadic block. It is weaker in hypotheses than the Hörmander–Mikhlin multiplier theorem in one variable, where ∣m′(ξ)∣≤A/∣ξ∣\abs{m'(\xi)} \le A/\abs{\xi} implies a variation of at most Alog⁡2A \log 2 on each block. Its proof is a model use of Littlewood–Paley theory together with the LpL^p boundedness of the Hilbert transform.
