Statement

Let MM be a closed smooth manifold with a smooth positive density, and let EE, FF be Hermitian vector bundles over MM. Let P ⁣:C∞(M;E)→C∞(M;F)P \colon C^\infty(M; E) \to C^\infty(M; F) be an elliptic differential operator of positive order with formal adjoint P∗P^*. Then for every t>0t > 0 the operators e−tP∗Pe^{-tP^*P} and e−tPP∗e^{-tPP^*} are trace class, and ind⁡P=tr⁡e−tP∗P−tr⁡e−tPP∗,\operatorname{ind} P = \operatorname{tr} e^{-tP^*P} - \operatorname{tr} e^{-tPP^*}, where ind⁡P\operatorname{ind} P is the analytic index.

Remarks

Idea of the proof: P∗PP^*P and PP∗PP^* have discrete spectra, with ker⁡P∗P=ker⁡P\ker P^*P = \ker P and ker⁡PP∗=ker⁡P∗\ker PP^* = \ker P^*. For λ>0\lambda > 0, PP maps the λ\lambda-eigenspace of P∗PP^*P isomorphically onto the λ\lambda-eigenspace of PP∗PP^*, with inverse λ−1P∗\lambda^{-1} P^*. So all terms with λ>0\lambda > 0 cancel in the difference of the traces, and only dim⁡ker⁡P−dim⁡ker⁡P∗\dim \ker P - \dim \ker P^* remains. The left side does not depend on tt, so one may let t→0+t \to 0^+. Then each trace is an integral of the heat kernel on the diagonal, which has an asymptotic expansion in powers of tt with local coefficients. Hence the index is the integral of a local density built from the coefficients of PP, and the singular terms of the expansion cancel. Example: for P=d+d∗P = d + d^* from even to odd forms, the formula reads χ(M)=∑k(−1)ktr⁡e−tΔk\chi(M) = \sum_k (-1)^k \operatorname{tr} e^{-t \Delta_k}, where Δk\Delta_k is the Hodge Laplacian on kk-forms.

Going deeper

For a student

The formula is the starting point of the heat equation proof of the index theorem. For small tt the heat traces are given by the Minakshisundaram–Pleijel expansion, so the index is the integral of the constant term of a local expansion. The local index theorem identifies this constant term with a characteristic form, which proves the Atiyah–Singer theorem for Dirac operators.
