Mehler–Fock transform
Builds on Integral transformLegendre functions
Definition
For real , let be the conical Legendre function of the first kind on . Let be a function such that the integral below converges for every . The Mehler–Fock transform of is the function
Remarks
Under suitable conditions on , the inversion formula is The function is real for real and , and it decays like up to a logarithmic factor as .
Example: if is integrable and vanishes outside , then the integral is over a compact interval of a continuous kernel, so is defined for every .
Non-example: has no Mehler–Fock transform, since grows like up to a logarithmic factor and is not integrable on .
The substitution turns the transform into an integral over , the form used on the hyperbolic plane.
