Meixner polynomials
Builds on Pochhammer symbolHypergeometric function
Definition
Let and be real numbers, and let be an integer. Write for the Pochhammer symbol. The Meixner polynomial of degree is that is, , a terminating hypergeometric function.
Remarks
They are orthogonal on the nonnegative integers: Example: . Check: the weights sum to , and their mean value of is , so the weighted sum of is . Non-example: for the clause fails, and the weights do not have a finite sum, so the orthogonality relation has no meaning. Limit to Laguerre: .
