Method of images
Builds on Green's function for the LaplacianFundamental solution of the LaplacianOpen setBoundary
Definition
Let and let be an open set with boundary . Let be the area of the unit sphere, and let be the fundamental solution of . Fix . An image system for and is a finite or countable family of points and real numbers such that:
- the series converges to a harmonic function of on , continuous on ;
- for every .
The method of images is the construction of the Green's function of as from an image system for each .
Remarks
Example: for the half-space and , the single point with is an image system, since when . This gives . For the unit ball and , the inverse point with is an image system. Non-example: for the half-space, the point with fails clause 2, since then on the boundary. In the plane the same idea works with , where may also contain an additive constant; for the unit disc this gives the Green's function in complex notation.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
