Statement

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let ff be a holomorphic function near 00 in ℂn+1\C^{n+1} with an isolated singularity at 00. Let FF be its Milnor fibre, the fibre of the Milnor fibration of ff at 00. Let μ\mu be the Milnor number of ff at 00. Then FF is homotopy equivalent to a wedge sum of μ\mu copies of the sphere SnS^n.

Remarks

The proof has three steps. Morse theory shows that FF has the homotopy type of a finite CW complex of dimension at most nn. Milnor shows that, for an isolated singularity, FF is (n−1)(n-1)-connected. A finite CW complex of dimension nn that is (n−1)(n-1)-connected is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of nn-spheres. For n≥2n \ge 2 this follows from the Hurewicz and Whitehead theorems, and for n=1n = 1 a connected graph is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of circles. The number of spheres is the rank of Hn(F;ℤ)H_n(F; \Z), which Milnor identifies with μ\mu through the degree of the gradient map.

Example: for f=z02+⋯+zn2f = z_0^2 + \cdots + z_n^2, μ=1\mu = 1, and the fibre {z02+⋯+zn2=δ}\set{z_0^2 + \cdots + z_n^2 = \delta} near 00 is homotopy equivalent to the single sphere {x∈ℝn+1:x02+⋯+xn2=δ}\set{x \in \R^{n+1} : x_0^2 + \cdots + x_n^2 = \delta} for δ>0\delta > 0.

The hypothesis that the singularity is isolated is needed. For f(z0,z1,z2)=z0z1f(z_0, z_1, z_2) = z_0 z_1 on ℂ3\C^3, the Milnor fibre is homotopy equivalent to a circle, not to a wedge of 22-spheres.

For a student

The theorem shows that the reduced homology of the Milnor fibre is concentrated in degree nn and is free of rank μ\mu. So the monodromy of the Milnor fibration is described by a single μ×μ\mu \times \mu integer matrix, and the intersection form on Hn(F;ℤ)H_n(F; \Z) is a μ×μ\mu \times \mu integer form. A basis of Hn(F;ℤ)H_n(F; \Z) can be chosen of vanishing cycles, one for each nondegenerate critical point of a generic perturbation of ff. This is the setting of Picard–Lefschetz theory.
