Möbius function of a poset
Builds on Locally finite posetIncidence algebra
Definition
Let be a locally finite poset, and write when and . The Möbius function of is the function given by:
- for all .
- for .
- when .
Remarks
Clause 2 is a recursion over the finite interval , so is well defined. Equivalently, is the inverse of the zeta function in the incidence algebra of , where for and otherwise. From this one also gets for .
Example: in the lattice of subsets of a finite set, for . Check: for , the sum , as clauses 1 and 2 require.
Non-example: the function for on the chain is not the Möbius function. It satisfies clause 1, but clause 2 fails at : there , while .
For the positive integers ordered by divisibility, is the number-theoretic Möbius function of .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
