Modified Bessel functions
Definition
Let , let be the gamma function, and let with the principal branch of .
- The modified Bessel function of the first kind of order is where is read as when is a non-positive integer.
- For , the modified Bessel function of the second kind of order is and for an integer it is .
Remarks
Both functions solve the modified Bessel equation . In terms of the Bessel function of the first kind, for . Example: for , and . For there is the integral form . A non-example: for an integer is not a second solution, since ; this is why is defined as a limit. is also called the Macdonald function.
