Modular lattice

Builds on LatticeJoin and meet

Definition

Let (L,∨,∧)(L, \vee, \wedge) be a lattice with join and meet ∨\vee and ∧\wedge and order ≤\le. The lattice LL is modular if for all a,b,x∈La, b, x \in L with a≤ba \le b, a∨(x∧b)=(a∨x)∧b.a \vee (x \wedge b) = (a \vee x) \wedge b.

Remarks

The inequality a∨(x∧b)≤(a∨x)∧ba \vee (x \wedge b) \le (a \vee x) \wedge b holds in every lattice when a≤ba \le b, so only the reverse inequality is a condition. Equivalently, LL satisfies the identity ((a∧b)∨x)∧b=(a∧b)∨(x∧b)((a \wedge b) \vee x) \wedge b = (a \wedge b) \vee (x \wedge b) for all a,b,x∈La, b, x \in L, so the modular lattices form a variety.

Example: the lattice of subspaces of a vector space VV is modular. If A⊆BA \subseteq B and XX are subspaces, and b=a+x∈(A+X)∩Bb = a + x \in (A + X) \cap B with a∈Aa \in A, x∈Xx \in X, then x=b−a∈Bx = b - a \in B, so b∈A+(X∩B)b \in A + (X \cap B).

Non-example: the pentagon lattice N5 with 0<a<c<10 < a < c < 1 and bb incomparable to aa and cc. Here a≤ca \le c, but a∨(b∧c)=a∨0=aa \vee (b \wedge c) = a \vee 0 = a while (a∨b)∧c=1∧c=c(a \vee b) \wedge c = 1 \wedge c = c.

Every distributive lattice is modular. The diamond lattice M3 is modular but not distributive.
