Definition

Let dโ‰ฅ1d \ge 1 and let gg be a nonzero function in the Schwartz space ๐’ฎ(โ„d)\mathcal{S}(\R^d), called the window. For a tempered distribution fโˆˆ๐’ฎโ€ฒ(โ„d)f \in \mathcal{S}'(\R^d), let VgfV_g f be its short-time Fourier transform: Vgf(x,ฯ‰)=โˆซโ„df(t)โ€‰g(tโˆ’x)โ€พโ€‰eโˆ’2ฯ€itโ‹…ฯ‰โ€‰dt,x,ฯ‰โˆˆโ„d,V_g f(x, \omega) = \int_{\R^d} f(t) \, \overline{g(t - x)} \, e^{-2\pi i t \cdot \omega} \, dt, \quad x, \omega \in \R^d, understood as the action of ff on the Schwartz function tโ†ฆg(tโˆ’x)โ€พeโˆ’2ฯ€itโ‹…ฯ‰t \mapsto \overline{g(t - x)} e^{-2\pi i t \cdot \omega}. Let 1โ‰คp,q<โˆž1 \le p, q < \infty. The modulation space Mp,q(โ„d)M^{p,q}(\R^d) is the set of fโˆˆ๐’ฎโ€ฒ(โ„d)f \in \mathcal{S}'(\R^d) with โˆฅfโˆฅMp,q=(โˆซโ„d(โˆซโ„dโˆฃVgf(x,ฯ‰)โˆฃpโ€‰dx)q/pdฯ‰)1/q<โˆž.\norm{f}_{M^{p,q}} = \left( \int_{\R^d} \left( \int_{\R^d} \abs{V_g f(x, \omega)}^p \, dx \right)^{q/p} d\omega \right)^{1/q} < \infty. If p=โˆžp = \infty or q=โˆžq = \infty, the corresponding integral is replaced by an essential supremum.

Remarks

The space does not depend on the choice of the window gg, and different windows give equivalent norms. With this norm Mp,q(โ„d)M^{p,q}(\R^d) is a Banach space. One writes Mp=Mp,pM^p = M^{p,p}. Special cases are M2=L2(โ„d)M^{2} = L^2(\R^d) with an equivalent norm, and M1M^{1}, the Feichtinger algebra. Weighted versions Mmp,qM^{p,q}_m insert a weight m(x,ฯ‰)m(x, \omega) into the integrand.

Example: let d=1d = 1 and ฯ†(t)=eโˆ’ฯ€t2\varphi(t) = e^{-\pi t^2}, and take g=ฯ†g = \varphi. Completing the square in tt gives โˆฃVฯ†ฯ†(x,ฯ‰)โˆฃ=2โˆ’1/2eโˆ’ฯ€(x2+ฯ‰2)/2.\abs{V_\varphi \varphi(x, \omega)} = 2^{-1/2} e^{-\pi (x^2 + \omega^2)/2}. This is integrable to every power in xx and in ฯ‰\omega, so ฯ†โˆˆMp,q(โ„)\varphi \in M^{p,q}(\R) for all p,qp, q.

Non-example: the constant function f=1f = 1 is not in Mp,q(โ„)M^{p,q}(\R) for p<โˆžp < \infty. Here โˆฃVg1(x,ฯ‰)โˆฃ=โˆฃgโ€พ^(ฯ‰)โˆฃ\abs{V_g 1(x, \omega)} = \abs{\hat{\overline{g}}(\omega)} does not depend on xx, so the inner integral is infinite whenever gโ€พ^(ฯ‰)โ‰ 0\hat{\overline{g}}(\omega) \ne 0. It does lie in Mโˆž,1(โ„)M^{\infty, 1}(\R).
