Definition

Let (mn)n≥0(m_n)_{n \ge 0} be a sequence of real numbers. For n≥0n \ge 0 let Δn=det⁡(mi+j)i,j=0n\Delta_n = \det (m_{i+j})_{i,j=0}^{n} be the determinant of its (n+1)×(n+1)(n+1) \times (n+1) Hankel matrix, and put Δ−1=1\Delta_{-1} = 1. Assume that Δn>0\Delta_n > 0 for all n≥0n \ge 0. The moment functional of (mn)(m_n) is the linear form LL on the real polynomials ℝ[x]\R[x] with L(xn)=mnL(x^n) = m_n for all n≥0n \ge 0. The monic orthogonal polynomials of (mn)(m_n) are the polynomials P0=1P_0 = 1 and, for n≥1n \ge 1, Pn(x)=1Δn−1det⁡(m0m1⋯mnm1m2⋯mn+1⋮⋮⋮mn−1mn⋯m2n−11x⋯xn).P_n(x) = \frac{1}{\Delta_{n-1}} \det \begin{pmatrix} m_0 & m_1 & \cdots & m_n \\ m_1 & m_2 & \cdots & m_{n+1} \\ \vdots & \vdots & & \vdots \\ m_{n-1} & m_n & \cdots & m_{2n-1} \\ 1 & x & \cdots & x^n \end{pmatrix}. Each PnP_n is monic of degree nn, and L(PmPn)=0L(P_m P_n) = 0 for m≠nm \ne n.

Remarks

Orthogonality holds because, for k<nk < n, applying LL to xkPnx^k P_n replaces the last row by (mk,…,mn+k)(m_k, \ldots, m_{n+k}), which equals row kk, so the determinant vanishes. The leading coefficient is 11 since the cofactor of xnx^n is Δn−1\Delta_{n-1}. Also L(Pn2)=Δn/Δn−1>0L(P_n^2) = \Delta_n / \Delta_{n-1} > 0. Let (mn)(m_n) be the moment sequence of a positive Borel measure μ\mu on ℝ\R with infinite support and all moments finite. Then Δn>0\Delta_n > 0 for all nn, and the PnP_n are the monic orthogonal polynomials of μ\mu in L2(μ)L^2(\mu).

Example: for Lebesgue measure on [−1,1][-1, 1] one has m0=2m_0 = 2, m1=0m_1 = 0, m2=23m_2 = \tfrac23 and Δ0=2\Delta_0 = 2, Δ1=43\Delta_1 = \tfrac43. The formula gives P1(x)=12det⁡(201x)=xP_1(x) = \tfrac12 \det \begin{pmatrix} 2 & 0 \\ 1 & x \end{pmatrix} = x and P2(x)=34(43x2−49)=x2−13P_2(x) = \tfrac34 \left( \tfrac43 x^2 - \tfrac49 \right) = x^2 - \tfrac13, the monic Legendre polynomials.

Non-example: the moments of the Dirac measure at 00 are m0=1m_0 = 1 and mn=0m_n = 0 for n≥1n \ge 1. Then Δ1=det⁡(1000)=0\Delta_1 = \det \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix} = 0, so the condition Δn>0\Delta_n > 0 fails. Indeed L(x2)=0L(x^2) = 0, and no monic polynomial of degree 11 is orthogonal to 11 with nonzero norm.
