Definition
Let be a positive Borel measure on such that:
- every moment , , is finite;
- the support of is an infinite set.
A sequence of real polynomials is a sequence of orthogonal polynomials for if for every and
Remarks
Condition 2 ensures that for every nonzero polynomial , so the integral is an inner product on the polynomials. Gram–Schmidt orthogonalization of then gives such a sequence, and each is determined up to a nonzero constant factor. The normalization gives the monic orthogonal polynomials, and gives the orthonormal ones. Often for a weight function on an interval.
Example: on and , , , the first Legendre polynomials. The integrals of and of vanish because these are odd functions. And .
Non-example: the monomials for the same measure are not orthogonal, since .
