Definition

Let RR and SS be rings with identity and let UU be an RR-SS-bimodule. A left RR-module CC is a cogenerator if every left RR-module embeds in a direct product of copies of CC; likewise on the right. The bimodule UU defines a Morita duality between RR and SS if these hold:

  1. UU is an injective cogenerator as a left RR-module and as a right SS-module.
  2. The map R→End⁡(US)R \to \End(U_S) sending rr to left multiplication by rr is a ring isomorphism.
  3. The map S→End⁡(RU)opS \to \End({}_R U)^{\mathrm{op}} sending ss to right multiplication by ss is a ring isomorphism.

Here End⁡(US)\End(U_S) and End⁡(RU)\End({}_R U) are the endomorphism rings of UU as a right SS-module and as a left RR-module. A ring RR has a Morita duality if such SS and UU exist.

Remarks

A left RR-module MM is reflexive if the evaluation map M→Hom⁡S(Hom⁡R(M,U),U)M \to \Hom_S(\Hom_R(M, U), U) is an isomorphism, and likewise for right SS-modules. Under a Morita duality, the functors Hom⁡R(−,U)\Hom_R(-, U) and Hom⁡S(−,U)\Hom_S(-, U) are mutually inverse contravariant equivalences between the reflexive modules on the two sides. The reflexive modules include all finitely generated modules and all finitely cogenerated modules. Example: for a field kk, take R=S=U=kR = S = U = k. The space kk is injective and is a cogenerator of kk-vector spaces, the multiplication maps k→End⁡(k)k \to \End(k) are isomorphisms, and the duality is V↦V∗V \mapsto V^* on finite-dimensional spaces. Non-example: R=S=U=ℤR = S = U = \Z fails clause 1, since ℤ\Z is not an injective ℤ\Z-module; the map 2ℤ→ℤ2\Z \to \Z, 2↦12 \mapsto 1, does not extend to ℤ\Z. Over a quasi-Frobenius ring RR, the bimodule U=RU = R gives a Morita duality between RR and itself. Over a complete Noetherian local commutative ring with residue field kk, the injective hull of kk gives a Morita duality, known as Matlis duality.
