Definition
Let be a white noise with variance : the have mean , variance and are pairwise uncorrelated. Let , and let with . A moving-average model of order , or MA(), is the time series model Its moving-average polynomial is .
Remarks
Every MA() process is weakly stationary with mean . With , its autocovariance is for and for . So its autocorrelation function vanishes beyond lag . The model is invertible when has no root in the closed unit disk. Then is a convergent linear combination of , and the process is an autoregressive model of infinite order.
Example: for MA(), has , and otherwise. Hence , which always lies in .
Non-example: the process is not an MA() for any finite , because its autocorrelation is nonzero at every lag.
The name has nothing to do with the moving average used to smooth data, although both are weighted sums over a window.
