Multidimensional Mellin transform

Builds on Mellin transformMultidimensional transform

Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let f ⁣:(0,∞)n→ℂf \colon (0, \infty)^n \to \C be locally integrable. For s=(s1,…,sn)∈ℂns = (s_1, \dots, s_n) \in \C^n and x∈(0,∞)nx \in (0, \infty)^n write xs−1=x1s1−1⋯xnsn−1x^{s - 1} = x_1^{s_1 - 1} \cdots x_n^{s_n - 1}. The nn-dimensional Mellin transform of ff is the function (ℳf)(s)=∫(0,∞)nxs−1f(x) dx,(\mathcal{M} f)(s) = \int_{(0, \infty)^n} x^{s - 1} f(x)\, dx, defined at those s∈ℂns \in \C^n where the integral converges absolutely.

Remarks

For n=1n = 1 this is the Mellin transform. Absolute convergence at ss depends only on (Re⁡s1,…,Re⁡sn)(\operatorname{Re} s_1, \dots, \operatorname{Re} s_n), and the set of such real parts is convex.

Example: f(x)=e−x1−⋯−xnf(x) = e^{-x_1 - \cdots - x_n}. The integral splits into a product, and (ℳf)(s)=Γ(s1)⋯Γ(sn)(\mathcal{M} f)(s) = \Gamma(s_1) \cdots \Gamma(s_n) for Re⁡sj>0\operatorname{Re} s_j > 0, by the gamma function integral.

Non-example: f=1f = 1 has no Mellin transform. For every ss, the factor ∫0∞x1Re⁡s1−1 dx1\int_0^\infty x_1^{\operatorname{Re} s_1 - 1}\, dx_1 diverges, at 00 or at ∞\infty.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
