Definition
A multiresolution analysis of (see Lp space) is a sequence of closed linear subspaces of with these properties.
- Nesting: for all .
- Scaling: for all and , if and only if the function lies in .
- Separation and density: , and is dense in .
- Scaling function: there is such that the translates form an orthonormal basis of .
Remarks
Some authors only ask in clause 4 that the translates of form a Riesz basis of ; an orthonormalization step then yields a function as in clause 4. Clauses 1 to 3 imply that if and only if . Let be the orthogonal complement of in . Then is the orthogonal direct sum of all . There is an orthonormal wavelet whose integer translates form an orthonormal basis of .
Example: let be the set of that are constant on each interval , . Nesting and scaling are clear, and step functions on dyadic intervals are dense in . A function in every is constant on and on for all , hence constant on and on , hence since it is square-integrable. With , clause 4 holds; this is the Haar multiresolution analysis.
Non-example: for all satisfies nesting, scaling and density, but , so separation fails.
