Definition
Let , let , let be pairwise distinct points of Euclidean space, and let . Let be a set of real functions of several variables on . A multivariate interpolant of the data from is a function such that for . Multivariate interpolation is the problem of finding such an , usually from a space chosen so that it exists and is unique.
Remarks
For and the polynomials of degree at most this is polynomial interpolation. For and a fixed space of polynomials in several variables with , the interpolant is unique exactly when the points are a unisolvent point set for .
Example: , , points , , with values . Then is an interpolant: , , .
Non-example: with the same and the collinear points , , with values , there is no interpolant. Indeed is affine in , but the values at do not lie on a line.
