Special functions Bessel and Airy functions Theorem
Neumann's addition theorem
Builds on Bessel function of the first kindGenerating function
Statement
Let be an integer and let denote the Bessel function of the first kind of integer order . For all , where the series converges absolutely.
Remarks
The proof uses the generating function . Since , multiplying the two Laurent series in and comparing the coefficients of gives the formula. Example: with and , one gets , using ; so . This identity shows and for and real . The formula as written is for integer orders; for non-integer orders there are related addition theorems of Graf and Gegenbauer.
Going deeper
For a student
The theorem is a convolution identity: the sequence is the convolution of and . In terms of Fourier series, it says that , read coefficient by coefficient. Its consequence gives uniform bounds on Bessel functions of integer order on the real line.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
