Definition

Let MM be a smooth manifold. Let J ⁣:TM→TMJ \colon TM \to TM be a smooth tensor field of type (1,1)(1,1), that is, a smooth field of linear endomorphisms of the tangent spaces. Let [⋅,⋅][\cdot, \cdot] be the Lie bracket of vector fields. The Nijenhuis tensor of JJ is the map NJN_J that sends vector fields X,YX, Y to the vector field NJ(X,Y)=[JX,JY]−J[JX,Y]−J[X,JY]+J2[X,Y].N_J(X, Y) = [JX, JY] - J[JX, Y] - J[X, JY] + J^2 [X, Y].

Remarks

The map NJN_J is C∞(M)C^\infty(M)-bilinear and antisymmetric, so it is a tensor field of type (1,2)(1,2), a 22-form with values in TMTM. It equals 12[J,J]\frac{1}{2}[J, J], where [J,J][J, J] is the Frölicher–Nijenhuis bracket of JJ with itself. For an almost complex structure, where J2=−id⁡J^2 = -\id, the formula reads NJ(X,Y)=[JX,JY]−J[JX,Y]−J[X,JY]−[X,Y]N_J(X, Y) = [JX, JY] - J[JX, Y] - J[X, JY] - [X, Y]. Some authors use a different constant factor.

Example: on ℝ2\R^2 let J∂x=∂yJ \partial_x = \partial_y and J∂y=−∂xJ \partial_y = -\partial_x. For X,YX, Y among ∂x,∂y\partial_x, \partial_y, all of X,Y,JX,JYX, Y, JX, JY are constant combinations of ∂x\partial_x and ∂y\partial_y, so all brackets vanish. By bilinearity over functions, NJ=0N_J = 0. More generally, for an almost complex structure one has NJ(JX,Y)=−JNJ(X,Y)N_J(JX, Y) = -J N_J(X, Y), so NJ(JX,X)=0N_J(JX, X) = 0; on a 22-manifold XX and JXJX span each tangent space where X≠0X \ne 0, hence NJ=0N_J = 0 on every surface.

Non-example: the expression [JX,JY]−[X,Y][JX, JY] - [X, Y] alone is not a tensor. Replacing XX by fXfX for a function ff gives f([JX,JY]−[X,Y])−(JY)(f) JX+Y(f) Xf([JX, JY] - [X, Y]) - (JY)(f)\, JX + Y(f)\, X, since [fA,B]=f[A,B]−B(f)A[fA, B] = f[A, B] - B(f) A. The last two terms are not zero in general, so the expression is not C∞(M)C^\infty(M)-linear in XX; the two middle terms of NJN_J cancel them.
