Łojasiewicz inequality
Builds on Analytic functionCompact set
Statement
Let be open and let be a real analytic function.
- Let , assume , and let be compact. Then there are constants and such that for all .
- Let . Then there are a neighbourhood of and constants and such that for all .
Remarks
Part 1 is the distance inequality and part 2 is the gradient inequality. Łojasiewicz proved them with his theory of semianalytic sets. A later route uses resolution of singularities to make locally a monomial times a unit, where both inequalities are direct.
Analyticity is necessary. The smooth function with for and has . But as for every , so part 1 fails on .
For on and , part 2 holds with and , since .

For a student
The gradient inequality is the key to the convergence of gradient flows. If is real analytic and is a bounded trajectory of , the inequality bounds the length of the trajectory, so converges to a single critical point. For merely smooth functions a bounded gradient trajectory can accumulate on a whole circle of critical points. The distance inequality is used to divide distributions by real analytic functions.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
