Operator exponential and translation

Builds on Mikusiński field of operatorsIntegration operator as convolution with the unit stepHeaviside step function

Statement

Let ℳ\mathcal{M} be the Mikusiński field of operators, the field of fractions of the convolution ring of locally integrable functions on [0,∞)[0, \infty). Let ss be the inverse of the constant function 11 in ℳ\mathcal{M}. For λ≥0\lambda \ge 0, let hλ(t)=H(t−λ)h_\lambda(t) = H(t - \lambda) for t≥0t \ge 0, where HH is the Heaviside step function, and define the translation operator e−λs=s hλe^{-\lambda s} = s \, h_\lambda. Then:

  1. For every locally integrable ff on [0,∞)[0, \infty), the product e−λsfe^{-\lambda s} f is the function t↦H(t−λ)f(t−λ)t \mapsto H(t - \lambda) f(t - \lambda).
  2. e−0s=1e^{-0 s} = 1, and e−λse−μs=e−(λ+μ)se^{-\lambda s} e^{-\mu s} = e^{-(\lambda + \mu) s} for all λ,μ≥0\lambda, \mu \ge 0.

Remarks

For t≥λt \ge \lambda, (hλ∗f)(t)=∫0t−λf(τ) dτ(h_\lambda * f)(t) = \int_0^{t - \lambda} f(\tau) \, d\tau, and for t<λt < \lambda it is 00. So hλ∗fh_\lambda * f is the integral from zero of the delayed function fλ(t)=H(t−λ)f(t−λ)f_\lambda(t) = H(t - \lambda) f(t - \lambda), that is, hλf=hfλh_\lambda f = h f_\lambda. Multiplying by s=1/hs = 1/h gives clause 1. Clause 2 follows from clause 1, since a delay by μ\mu followed by a delay by λ\lambda is a delay by λ+μ\lambda + \mu, and ℳ\mathcal{M} has no zero divisors. For example, e−λsh=hλe^{-\lambda s} h = h_\lambda: delaying the unit step hh by λ\lambda gives the jump of size one at time λ\lambda. The notation matches the Laplace transform, where a delay by λ\lambda multiplies the transform by e−λse^{-\lambda s}.

Going deeper

For a student

The result explains Heaviside's formal rule that e−λpe^{-\lambda p} acts as a delay, where pp is differentiation. In Mikusiński's setting no power series in ss is needed: the operator is defined directly from the delayed step. It lets one solve equations with delays and treat piecewise defined inputs, such as a switch that turns on at time λ\lambda. The same rule for the Laplace transform is the time shift theorem.
