Order polynomial
Definition
Let be a finite partially ordered set with elements. For an integer , let with the usual order. Let be the number of order-preserving maps , that is, maps with whenever . The order polynomial of is the unique polynomial in that takes the value at every integer .
Remarks
Such a polynomial exists, and it has degree with leading coefficient , where is the number of linear extensions of .
Example: for the chain , . Check: an order-preserving map is a weakly increasing sequence in , that is, a multiset of size from values; the leading coefficient is , and .
Non-example: the count of all maps is not the order polynomial of the chain when . It also counts maps that break the order, such as , .
The strict order polynomial counts the maps with . Stanley's reciprocity theorem says .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
