Definition
Let . Let be a smooth function, the phase. Let be a smooth function with compact support, the amplitude. The oscillatory integral with phase and amplitude is the function of the real parameter given by A point with is a critical point, or stationary point, of the phase.
Remarks
Example: , and smooth with compact support. Then is the Fourier transform of at , and repeated integration by parts gives for every . More generally, if on the support of , then decays faster than any power of .
Non-example: and on . The amplitude does not have compact support, and does not converge as a Lebesgue integral. Such integrals are still given a meaning as distributions, which is the setting of the more general oscillatory integrals of Hörmander.
If is the only critical point in the support of and the Hessian of at is invertible, the method of stationary phase gives as .
